IN THE NEW FACTORY

"It is really nice for me to get some competent people like you, " Jerry said. He was taking Tim and Mary Ann and Mr. Wilson around the factory where he had given them jobs yesterday.

"I know how well you all worked at the warehouse, and that is why I invited you all over. I aim to get the best people here and I urge you to introduce yourselves to everyone."

Jerry took them on a tour around the manufacturing facility. He showed them how computers controlled a hot knife that cut out parts in basic shapes from many materials. These were taken to other people who took these rough parts and made them smooth.

Mr. Wilson requested that Tim should be assigned to him. For several weeks Tim learned what rough parts he should take to what people to make them smooth. Mr. Wilson had other workers beside Tim, but he trusted Tim the most.

"Is it strange working for Jerry now, when Jerry used to be working for you?" said Tim one day in a rare exchange with Mr. Wilson.

"I always liked Jerry," he said. "And I tried to stop that evil  chairman at the other company from firing him. Those people are now retired to some prison, I think, sweetly trying to entertain the guards. But right now it's not so bad, just to have a job."

"That's for sure," said Tim, "and at a nicer place."

"Maybe some day you want to be a supervisor," said Mr. Wilson.

"Well, Fabian got appointed to be my supervisor."

"But Fabian was fortunate that his brother married the daughter of the chairman. Then the chairman took all the profits and mailed loans to himself. I warned them about the blind mistake of making a snake like Fabian into a supervisor."

"Did they welcome your message?" asked Tim.

"Worse. They hated it when I would advise them of dirt in the company. They brushed it aside, like a bad  taste on their lips. But they knew I was right."

"So it was irritating to work there as a manager?" asked Tim.

"Especially as a manager. It was a mystery to me, like the company had an empty   soul. And there was no one to minister to the disease."

"But we're lucky. Here is better…"

"A lot better," said Mr. Wilson.

The next week they promoted Mr. Wilson to manager.

For a day Tim pondered who would be his new supervisor.

And then he knew.
