The "Beat" Inside Main Words

Now one beat for each Main Word is easy. Remember? Say that after me:

You see? One beat for each Main Word. But...

What happens to Sentence Stress when the Main Words have 2...or 3...or 4 parts?

OK, let's try one now:

Teresa is visiting every hospital in the nation.     OK, now lets pick out those Main Words that are stressed.

Teresa is visiting every hospital in the nation.   Teresa  visiting  hospital  nation

If you only hear the words Teresa   visiting     hospital   nation...you can almost understand the meaning of the sentence.

Now it gets harder...Main Words are stressed only on one part, one strong syllable. You already know this, but now let's see it the same sentence that we used before, Say it after me:

TeREsa is VISiting every HOSpital in the NAtion.

So now you see it. Sentence Stress is not just about Main Words. It is about the Main Parts of the Main Words.

So now you know the hardest part of Sentence Stress. The timing of the syllables between the beats stays the same. Say this after me:

Can you say all the syllables between those Downbeats....quickly? Try again after me:

Surprise! The time between beats is the SAME! This is going to be FUN!
