THE SHOW MUST GO ON

There were two people at the television station, a man and a woman. The woman, Ann Hewlett wanted to be President. The man was acting like a newsman, asking her a range of questions for practice. They had just come in from a bar next door.

“First” said the newsman,” What will you do to support peace for our nation?”

“Well let me explain… Mr. Gibbons,” she said, turning her face – on its long neck – to smile at him.

“You can call me Charlie,” he laughed. “This is only practice.”

“Well, Charlie….To have peace,” Ann offered, “We have a situation where, to some degree, we have to understand the enemy.”

“What is there to understand?” Charlie asked. “Doesn’t the enemy want to kill us and make us slaves?”

“Charlie you are mixed up,” said Ann. “ They can’t really do both things – kill us and make us slaves….But we must find out their  purpose. I think they want things for their society. They want bread and something to drink on the table for everyone. They want their dear families to be safe. And perhaps they want their children to have education.”

“So they don’t want to kill us?” Charlie asked, just like a newsman.

“No, they just want our money…but they know if they kill us we won’t be able to make any more money for them. So that makes us safe…” Ann laughed again.

“But if they make us slaves, we could keep making money for them. Well, that had not occurred to me,” said Charlie. “So…if we want to live, we must be slaves?”

“Well,” said Ann, “I don’t think that path will be necessary. I think they would just ask us to share with them. Then they could tax us, like our nation does now.  They would take us to court in the same way if we didn’t pay. But we wouldn’t have to spend money to fight wars then, so we’d actually save money.”

“But when do we stop being slaves ?” asked Charlie.

“Well,” said Ann, “At that stage it is simple. We stop making money for them.  A lot of people already can’t make any money, no matter how hard they try. So it would wouldn’t be much effort for everyone to stop. And the enemy only wants what we have now because they think we are fat. If we were thin, then maybe they would not treat us like enemies. I’m going to talk about how to lose weight in my speech Monday night.”

“These are very interesting ideas,” said Charlie, again acting like a newsman, “But now could we move to the subject of wind power?”

“All of this power we need, wind and everything else,” said Anne, “Is just another way of making money without working so hard for it. My people tell me that there is this liquid substance , and if we heat it up, it makes steam. The steam stays within an iron shell, and when we connect it up, it can put cars and trains and ships and everything into motion and charge other things.”

“Do you think,” Charlie asked, “That there is a market for that across the world?”

“Well, the more we have steam power, the less anyone needs slaves,” Ann said, completing her answer. “So that is another way to keep the peace. And the enemy already has many other kinds of power, almost without limit. They just need to be organized to use it. So we have to be disorganized, and then we are not their slaves..”

“So to finish this,” Charlie said, “You feel that instead of having wars we could just share , and that if we were thin they wouldn’t think we had money and treat us like enemies, that we can solve our power problems with steam, and the way not to be slaves is to be disorganized.”

“That’s about it, Charlie. As simple as falling off a log. So now let’s go next door to the bar for another drink.”

Just then a workman came into the dark television station. He saw the two people sitting there laughing at their practice. And then he saw the red light was on – the light that showed they were going out to all the nation. As he walked up to them, he pointed to the light. “Say…I don't mean to break in...but...” the workman said, “Did you…perhaps… know….that light was on...all the time...?
