Prefixes II - NEGATION, NUMBER, and DEGREE
NEGATION prefixes change the meaning to the
opposite. Negation prefixes say what something is not. In the story this lesson, the word disorganized meant
"not organized". Try these:
dis + agree = disagree (does not agree).
un +
happy = unhappy (not happy).
non + sense = nonsense (without sense).
NUMBER prefixes say how often something
happens or give an idea of how many of something there is.
Something that is biweekly (bi + weekly)happens
every two weeks.
A triangle (tri + angle)
has 3 angles.
Multimedia (multi + media) mixes
many kinds of media.
DEGREE prefixes talk
about the relative amount of an noun or an adjective. Clearly,
Superman is more of a man. Here are others:
super + modern = super-modern (very, very
modern).
over + state = overstate (say too much
or too strongly).
up + lifting = uplifting
(lifting something up, or lifting one's spirits).
So you should collect these little prefixes, because they are
easy ways to have a larger set of words, and maybe even make some of your own.
