IF YOU CAN'T JOIN THEM, BEAT THEM

Judy asked Gabriella to leave her store. Gabriella was crying. She walked out to the sidewalk, and stepped off the corner into the stream of cars.

"Hey," someone said," That's dangerous."

Gabriella stepped back from the street in a hurry.

"Have you no fear?" said the woman she had helped in Judy's store, coming out the door with her girl.

"I guess I would rather not go through that process again." Gabriella rubbed her red eyes. The drops were washing her face. "It is not a good way to interview for a job."

"We saw how she operates," the woman said. "And you were the chief reason we bought things there."

"It depends on what you want," said Gabriella, "She has a good supply there."

"But," said the mother, "You provide the necessary help."

"I have an idea," the girl said. "Remember that party we must go to at our neighbors?  The outdoor dinner for the famous soldier?"

Her mother remembered. "The dinner with all the meat on the bones, and the corn and the fruit that you must eat from plates while you stand? It makes such a mess."

"Yes," agreed the girl. "Thus, I'll by something dark and thick so I can drop food on mine." She looked at a little clock with a bell on it in a store window. "We have time. Let's all go look in that expensive boutique across the street."

As they walked in to the boutique, the mother pointed Gabriella to a rail above them. "That is the upper wing, where the rich people shop." They moved through the large crowd of shoppers, up to the special area that Gabriella imagined was created just for rich people.

There Gabriella started going through dresses comparing them for the girl while the mother sat down in a chair. One dress had a thin tube-like string tied around the middle, and the other dress was from a French colony, and had a matching pair of gloves with it.

"Which one do you like, Mother?" the girl said.

The mother pointed to the dress with the string around the middle.

"OK," said the girl, sharply, "I'll take the other one."

The mother rolled her eyes and said to Gabriella. "She's been learning things from my niece…but this is so kind of you. I'll just get something warm to cover my arms and knees for the outdoor evening, and we'll go down and buy them."

Everyone was at the register when, by chance, the niece of the woman walked in. The girl ran over and the two girls came jumping back.

"Gabriella" said the girl, "Can you go with us upstairs to shop for my cousin here?"

"This is your cousin?" Gabriella smiled, "OK," and the three of them went back to the special wing again.

"These will be quite nice on you," said the salesperson at the counter. "It's so busy today I couldn't get free to help you myself, but these will be very good for you and your daughter." Clearly, the salesperson already knew the mother.

"We did have help," said the mother. "In two stores now." And the mother told the salesperson how much Gabriella had helped them so much in the other store.

"Very impressive." said the salesperson, "I could really use someone like her. Do you think she would talk to us about working here?"

The mother smiled, "Well, could you pay Gabriella a good commission?"

The salesperson, who also owned the store said "Well… not to start."

The mother said, "Well then, why would she start? You know you could compensate Gabriella with as good a commission as the best of your people, and she would deserve it. And it would certainly make me tell my friends to come here, as well. But I don't know. You will be lucky if she doesn't already have a great job."

The salesperson, finished taking the credit card information, and handed the sacks to the mother. "Will you talk to Gabriella first, and try to convince her to work here?"

"They may want her at your competition across the street."

"Oh Please, will you talk with her?..I could sometimes give you some special prices. Please talk to her before she goes back there."

"I guess I could do that," said the mother. "But let's watch a bit.... It looks like she is making more sales for you right now."
