SUSAN SAVES THE DAY

Susan was on a plane trip to find a new job with more pay. Who knew the plane might develop problems, and go down into a hole in the clouds, and hit a mountain? At first there were shouts from the mouths of some people, who were surprised to be alive. Susan was still wearing her dress when she climbed out onto the snow from a break in the side of the plane. The skin on her legs was cool. She climbed back into the dark plane and put something on her legs. Winter things were in the bottom of her case.

The stone and snow outside the plane were quiet. Susan went around to the front of the plane. Everyone died in the front section, but some people were still living in the back. There was no method to call to the airport for help, just cold iron everywhere.  She could not get a tone on her cell. This was trouble, except Susan now had the seed of an idea. It would be an experiment, but some cells had a design to talk worldwide. That was the key.

She shouted back into the plane. “Has anyone got a world-wide cell I can use?”

Back in the dark plane, a hand held up a tiny cell. “I do,” said a man in a back row. But it can’t get a tone here. And I think I have a break in my leg.”

“Could I make a trade with you? “Susan said.

“For your leg?” the man said.

“No, I'll trade your cell for mine,” Susan said. “If I climb up to the rise on the mountain with your cell, maybe I can get a good strong tone. Then someone can receive my call for help.”

“Who will you call?” said the man.

Susan did not know who to call.

“Then I suggest that you call this number," the man said, and gave her a piece of paper. “They will help.”

Sticking the paper in her coat pocket, Susan remembered that number from somewhere. She began to climb to the rise above the plane. Susan could not move with speed, because the wind was cold, and was bringing snow. On the rise the cell tone was still very poor. Then she saw the top of the mountain. At least, she thought, nothing can get in my way up there.

The mountain top was as flat like a play yard, but very, very cold. Now she knew how she remembered the number on that piece of paper. The cell’s tone was clean and loud when she called it.

“With this phone,” said the voice at the other end, “We can get your exact position and send help right now.”

“Oh, and one more thing,” Susan smiled in the cold. “I was coming to visit your office to talk about a job.”

“Susan?” the voice said, “Is that Susan?”

“Yes,” she said, over the cold wind.

“Susan,” the voice sounded happy, “That man in the plane will be over you in the job, if you will join us here. You are the exact symbol of the person we want.”

“OK, great,” Susan said, “But…just this single time…I’ll be a little late…OK?”
