Rules for Spelling Plural Nouns
Many are simple; some are more difficult. Some...well...
Simple.
1. Add an "s:
car + s = cars
house + s = houses
With sounds...
2. After ssssss sound, add "es:"
class + es = classes
glass + es = classes
box + es = boxes
3. OK...now don't laugh. After "f" sound, change "f" to
"v" and add "es":
half halv + es = halves (And
then, you pronounce like "haves." (LOL)(This does not work of course, with the
word "laugh.")
3.1 If the last "f" sound has a
silent
"e" then change "f" to "v" and add "s":
life
live + s = lives
4. Nouns ending with "y" after a
vowel it's simple. Add "s":
boy + s = boys
day + s = days
4.1 Nouns ending with a "y" after a
consonant: Change
the "y" to "i" and add"es." That's right. Don't cry....
country countr
(change "y" to "i") + i + es = countries
family famil (change "y"
to "i") + i + es = families
This also works with the word "cry" ("cries.")
5. "Man" changes to "men"; also in workman (workmen)
and woman (women). (Strangely, we pronounce "Woman" as "wimmen"
-- with no rule or reason we use in any other word.)
6. This last one isn't a rule: Just remember "child" becomes "children"
and "fish" doesn't change at all! Had enough?
