SUFFIXES - How we make new words with ENDINGS.

Warning: Many people create new words with Prefixes, but NOT with Suffixes.  WordMaker helps you see the "little changes" made to existing words.  Then then you can remember that word and use that word again yourself.

In  Story M that you've read, there were a lot of words you see where the endings make new words:
combine - e + ation  = combination
(the result of combining)
tooth            + less   =  toothless
(without a tooth)
enjoy           +  able  =  enjoyable
(able to be enjoyed)
extreme      + ly       =  extremely     (done in a high degree)

But now let's look at these same new words in a different way.  After each one is the way we change the jobs they do.

combine - e + ation  = combination (verb to noun)
tooth            + less   =  toothless
(noun to adjective)
enjoy           +  able  =  enjoyable
(verb to adjective)
extreme       +  ly     =   extremely     (adjective to adverb)

In future WordMakers™ we will show you a lot of these Suffixes, or endings, to make new words with.  But as you collect these endings, be careful to look at whether the pronunciation stress stays the same.

In most of these the stress is the same as in the base word. For instance, comBINE has the stress on syllable 2.  However, in combinAtion the stress falls on syllable 3.

You can run, but you can't hide...
From words that have a STRESS inside.
