SHOPPING WITH LINDA AND MARGO

Linda and her younger sister Margo were in seats in the huge inside shopping center in their city.  In a bag at her side, Margo had a new coat she got to match her shoes. Now they were discussing whether to take the coat back.

“Now I think the shoes will look wrong with it,” Margo said.

They were at a table in the Food Fair, eating sugared apples with iced milk.   “Perhaps you now require new shoes,” Linda laughed.

Other smells came to their pretty noses, smells of special foods from all over their continent, fruits in season, salted nuts; all kinds of good things to feed the crowd of shoppers.

“That’s what I was afraid of,” Margo said. “Thanks for telling me. I buy the coat to go with the shoes, and now you think I need new shoes to go with the new coat.”

“Right,” said Linda, “and then you can repeat the experience. You’ll have to buy another coat to go with the new shoes.”

“What will our parents say?”

“They’ll say that you have no skill when you shop with their card.” Linda laughed again.

Margo looked sad, but then became brighter when a young man in a suit arrived at their table. He had been running like a track star past the ropes which separated the tables from the shoppers.

“Say,” he said to Margo, “Did you just buy a coat at that store?” He pointed back to the store where Margo just got her coat.

“Perhaps…” Linda said.

“If you have the sales slip, you may be the one who wins the dream trip,” he claimed.

“I have it here,” Margo said.

“This is the dream trip we can give away from this store branch,” he said. “Does the slip have a star on it?”

Margo looked in the bag. The sales slip did have a star printed on it. “Oh, yes” she said, “Does that mean I win?” She was very happy now.

The young man in the suit showed a broad smile. He had a silver writing tool and a sheet of paper on a board. “All I need is your cell number. We’ll call you about it.”

“Oh how wonderful,” Margo said. “My cell number is….”

“I have seen similar young men,” Linda said, taking a bit of the sugared apple. “Some are very…forward.”

“It’s a guided trip to the famous Valley of the Sun,” he said, holding the silver writing tool to the paper.

“No score this time,” Linda said, looking at the young man.

“Really, there are no special conditions…I just need your cell number,” he said.

Linda’s eyes were like steel. “We’re not shopping for men.”

“I can believe that…But, “he said, turning to Margo, “You’ll miss a great chance,”

Linda brought his eyes back. “A chance at you?…No thanks.”

“Well, OK…I hate for you to miss this dream trip…But….OK,” he smiled and walked away.

“Why did you do that! Margo cried, when he was away from them. Her face showed total surprise. “I was going to win a guided trip to the famous Valley of the Sun!”

“A trip to nowhere,” Linda said. “That was just his way to meet girls.”

“But he knew about the slip with the star on it.”

Linda rolled her eyes. “All the slips have stars on them. Did you notice the name of the store?” She pointed across the crowd of shoppers.

The store name was inside a large star on a huge sign above the door. It said Morning Star Stores.
