THE HALF-FULL GLASS
IS BROKEN
Jerry brought Tim and Fabian together to talk about the work they would do today. Before Jerry came in, the two talked a little in a separate room.
"You should be careful with Jerry. He's a good guy, but he thinks you have a bad attitude."
"Well, you see… Jerry should be careful with me…My brother is friends with the owner. That's how I got this job. So if I say 'Jerry is gone', then Jerry is gone."
Tim did not like this. But he was careful. "Yes, but he is still our supervisor."
Fabian rolled his eyes. Jerry walked in.
"Ok," said
Jerry, "Today we've got to work as a team to save
time and
control the
flow of this shipping out the door. Now, Tim, I'm
choosing to put you on the front
end."
"All right," said Tim, "What do you want me to do?"
"Well," said Jerry, "I want the elements of the job to be equal for the two of you. So Tim, you will insert the glass containers of insect oil in the boxes, and we can't break any of them. We also have other chemicals around that we don't want it to mix with. They might even cause a fire."
"Can we take a break now?" asked Fabian, laughing.
"This is pretty difficult," said Jerry, not looking at Fabian, "So I'd like to practice the teamwork between you and Tim. I hope we can have it all loaded by noon, but it will cost money for our company if we break anything."
"Why do they have to be glass containers?" asked Fabian.
"I expect that this oil has the effect of eating the paper containers" said Jerry, slowly now. "And also, the other insect killer makes the gardens and crops turn brown." He looked straight at Fabian now. "Now, Fabian, I would like you to ask me what you should do now to help?"
"Do we have to wear masks?"
Jerry needed to blow out air. "Nowhere in this period of modern human history is there a character such as you….Now say it."
Fabian smiled a very large smile. "What do you want me to do?"
Jerry's blood was hot, but he did not touch Fabian. Tim thought it might be fair for Jerry to hit Fabian now with the hand with the ring on it, and send Fabian to the doctor. But Jerry did nothing.
"You will collect
the boxes from the end of the belt and
stack them in a gentle
way on the
wooden
palette If you have to stop
the belt, hit this red button." Jerry indicated where the red Stop button was,
with a wire
going to
bank of
electronics." Do
you want to practice that?"
"It's so simple that I don't need practice." Fabian rolled his eyes. "Let's go. I want to get this done so we can have a break."
There were 6 large glass containers in each box. Tim filled each box very carefully to protect the glass and then put it on the belt.
There were many boxes on the palette when a young woman came to the door and put her head in. "Fabian! Hi, I just thought I would stop by…and…"
Fabian was surprised, but happy to see the young woman here. "Juanita! How did you locate me? Do you work near here?" He turned to her and did not remember the belt, bringing the glass containers.
"FABIAN!" shouted Tim. "STOP THE BOXES!"
"FABIAN!" shouted Jerry, who had just walked in. "HIT THE BUTTON!"
The first box was falling off the belt. Fabian was able to catch it in his hands just before it hit the ground. Another box was coming down the belt. And starting to fall off…
"THE BUTTON! THE BUTTON!" shouted Jerry.
"HIT RED BUTTON!" shouted Tim.
"RED BUTTON!" Even Juanita was shouting now, jumping up and down.
"WHAT BUTTON?" asked Fabian.
Many of the glass containers broke when the boxes hit the floor. The insect oil ran out and mixed with other chemicals. A fire started. Some of the warehouse was burned.
Jerry told Fabian that Fabian would lose his job. But Fabian called his brother, and Jerry lost his job.
Fabian also asked his brother for one more thing.
a. wear: wear out a coat….wear it so many times it gets old. "When I run it wears out my shoes."
b. flow: cash-flow...the amount of money going in, and out. "Until I get my pay, I will have a cash-flow problem."
c. ring:
give a ring = to call someone
d. wire: wireless Internet connection...through the air, without a wire. "Cell phones and radios are both wireless."
