Say It™ for Lesson C.....Sounds....mp3?

Remember how we talked about the special sound that comes on the part of a word that is not strong? Well it is also very important to make the right sound on the part of a word that IS STRONG.

As you know, sounds are not always spelled the same way. That's why you must learn the sound WITH the word. There are almost no rules. So here are some words you know, and their main sounds:

horse    star   serve

Say these words after me so you are sure of the sounds.

horse    star   serve

Now let's take the [o] sound in horse and put it in another word.

before …Say that again after me  before

See how that was on the last part of the word. It was on the strong part and you must hear a pretty good sound. Now let's try that .... sound with the strong part as the first part:

forest ….Say it after me…. forest …so you see the difference in the part that is strong. before …. forest …Say that after me before …. forest …  You see the strong part needs the good sound.

Now we will do the same thing with 2 other sounds. First the word star:

Say that after me: star......again.......star.

Now let's take the [a] sound in  star and put it in another word.

fathersay that again after me   father

See how that was on the first part of the word. It was on the strong part and you must hear a pretty good sound.

You see the strong part always needs the good sound.

Now for the most difficult thing today: we'll try a sound that is the same, but the letters are different each time. We will use the words: serve....circle...occur. That is why you must learn the strong parts, and the sound, with each word you learn.

We'll take them one at a time. First serve. That word only has one part, so the sound on the word serve is the same as you would say on the strong part in circle....let's say those two  .... serve..... circle....Say them again, after me:....serve.....circle.

Now let's take the next word occur....say that after me.... occur  ....Now let's say serve again with both  circle and occur  ....after me.... serve.....circle...  occur  ...Again... serve.....circle... occur   ...

Great! Now you are understanding how to make the best sound on the strong part of the word!

Now here are some sentences from the words we just said.  These are difficult, so first say them after me:

My father has got a horse in the forest....

Say it again after me.... My father has got a horse in the forest....

Now here is the last one for you to practice: The stars occur in a circle.

Say that after me:  The stars occur in a circle.

You have a lot to practice here. But now you know how to learn the sounds of the words with their strong parts.

And now people will understand you even better!
